The Great Finley River Expedition.
(Click on map to see in entirety)
The Finley is absolutely gorgeous. It's actually technically the "Finley Creek," if you look at it on a map, but everybody from the area calls it a river, and I have to agree. If you follow the little squirley blue line from the NE corner of the map above, (there arrow is Lindenlure, where we put in) all the way down, it goes under 13, and then keeps moving all through there. The V made by the two rivers in the SW corner, just at M hwy is where it connects to the James River. We headed south there and ended at the "A" marker.
I love being spontaneous. Growing up, Mom was always game for last minute plans. There were countless mornings that we'd be up, doing our chores, starting on the day's school work, and a friend would call and say "We're going to Silver Dollar City, you wanna come?" Within an hour we'd have peanut butter and jelly packed and be loaded into the van.
This weekend was kinda like that.
Saturday morning, 'bout 9:30, I was in the kitchen and Quinn was signing into facebook. The night before I had made a comment about taking the canoe out that afternoon, then pumping up an air mattress and sleeping in the back of Quinn's truck, under the stars. It sounded fun, and easy. Lo and behold, when Quinn signed in, one of his friends was talking about floating the Finley Creek and the James River over the next two days. Quinn pulled up a map. There was a spot 22 miles downstream of where we've been keeping our canoe, that was a campground and a public access. We have a big two man tent and a tiny one man, so we figured if we packed the one man in the canoe we could stop over night if we didn't make the whole 22 miles that day. The next two hours were insane. In about 30 minutes we had food packed in two separate coolers, (one for the truck, at the camground, and for the car, to go in the canoe with us) blankets, tents, bug spray, sunscreen, dry clothes and cooking gear sotrted into the two vehicles and we were off. Quinn to WalMart for an air mattress and bottled water and to the library to print our map, and me to Marshals for river clothes and to the bank for cash.
We met at the library and headed to the campground to drop off the truck. It wasn't quite 11 yet. We were still banking on being in the water by noon, and having 8 hours of daylight to float. Then I followed Quinn while we got lost on back roads in Nixa, and almost an hour later made it to a campground that had absolutely no available spots. We parked the truck at the state access next door and prayed it wouldn't get towed if we didn't get back that night, and headed off to find the canoe.
30 minutes later we had the canoe on the car and were headed across the road to put in below the dam. That particular area is a MASSIVE party hot spot year round, and it being Memorial Day weekend, it was swamped with party goers and.... cops. LOTS of cops. They were checking every driver's license of every car there, and there were a lot of us. They had a couple people in cuffs and a prisoner van there, so it obviously wasn't without cause. It took almost 45 minutes for us to get Quinn's licence back and finally get the canoe in the water. Then Quinn had to drive the car back across the road and walk back down to me.
By then it was after 2:30. We were gonna have to camp.
The first six miles were gorgeous, but excruciatingly slow. We had over a hundred pounds of gear in the canoe, and had to portage around at least 6 fallen trees in the first 5 miles. Some times that meant (Quinn) dragging the canoe as much as 20 yards through deep river gravel. We had to unload at every stop and reload before we could head on. It was difficult.
When we hit the park/dam at Ozark we decided to take advantage of the grills, mown grass and public bathrooms, so we had a 40 minute dinner stop, then carried the canoe over the highway and down a steep hill to reload below that dam. Another 2 miles and it was getting dark enough that we decided to stop. At some point between the Ozark dam and camping, I lost one of my flip flops.
Yes. I wore flip flops.
Hey! Don't judge me!
We pulled up on a gravel bar, then set up our tent in a small clearing just above the river. No air mattress, no dry clothes, just a one man tent, 55% humidity, a can of bug spray and two blankets. One we folded in half and put underneath us, the other I wadded into padding for whatever area of my body hurt the most at the moment. It was way warm enough to live without covering up until probably 2ish, at which point Quinn covered up with half of it and I wadded the rest of it up underneath me and snuggled close to him for body heat. It was more then sufficient. I was thoroughly awake around 5. I'd only dozed all night, so once the birds were singing and there was a little bit of light ,there was no going back to sleep. Quinn, on the other hand, was finally actually truly asleep, so I let him sleep for an hour, then we got up.
I went to try to start a fire on the gravel, but our lighter was dead. Darn. So we ate cold leftovers from dinner the night before and got on our way.
Progress was much better that morning. We only had to unload, carry /drag and reload once before we hit our 12 mile mark... the next dam.
This one was creepy. You could hear it a half mile back, and coming up to it all you could see was a sharp edge to the water. There was nothing but woods/bluffs on one side and a four foot concrete wall on the other. We pulled up alongside the wall, unloaded all of our gear onto it, then Quinn lifted himself up and over while managing not to capsize me. We had a 10 foot chain that we use to chain it to a tree at Linden, and he tied it off with that, then lifted me up and on to solid ground. Then he hauled the canoe up by the chain, and pulled it across the road and down the access on the other side. He had barely been letting me help with all the dragging/lifting before, what with me being six months pregnant, but by that point my feet were so bruised and sore that he wasn't letting me hardly anything. Talk about a stud. He was pretty amazing.
Down the other side and we were feeling like we were home free. The River had widened and picked up some speed, so we were making really good time. We covered the next 5 miles in about an hour and a half.
Then... Well... We lost some time. And a lot of other stuff.
Coming around a corner we could see a birch limb that was fallen over the water and laying over a fallen tree that looked like it was laying along the right bank. It was close to three feet above the water, so after a quick conference while back paddling, we decided to duck under it. The current looked straightforward enough to carry us through, and we could pull it along the fallen tree if it got stuck.
What we didn't see was a) the fast side current about 10 feet before the limb, b) that the fallen tree that looked like it was on the right bank was actually in the middle of the river, hiding an inlet that was allowing the side current to quicken/strengthen.
About 5 seconds later we were thrown against the downed tree on the right and our canoe was thoroughly swamped with our things very happily floating down river. The canoe was creating a whole new current, and with its nose over the birch limb, it was stuck. I had grabbed the ziplock full of our wallets, phones, maps and etc, and was braced against the gravel bottom keeping the canoe from turning all the way over and getting swept into the massive mess of brush, deep water, and fast currents on the other side of the tree while Quinn grabbed an armload of stuff and waded it to land. When he got back, I took my load and put it ashore, then we stood by the canoe and tried to figure out what the heck to do.
With the current actually pushing its full 16 feet of length into the tree and keeping it full of water, there was no way we could move it back up stream like we needed to. We tried a couple different things, then I realized that the water was actually digging a trench underneath it (that I was starting to slide into...creepy, that) that was beginning to free up one end of it. We jumped at that, and within a few minutes had it standing on end, and therefore, mostly emptied of water and out of the current. From there we flipped it upside down, guided it under the tree and pulled it against the current onto the right bank.
It's exhausting just to type it out. It was stressful, and difficult, and the whole time we were trying to turn the boat over I was thinking "Thank you Jesus, that we saved the phone, 'cause we're gonna have to get hauled out of here." We took a short break, then walked the canoe up the bank about 10 yards. We had to get it to the left bank in order to portage it around the whole mess, but the water was waist high and fast and I was exhausted, so I stood in the shallow water while Quinn walked one end through the deep area, then I walked into the deep water and hung onto the canoe while he pulled it across. It meant more work for him, but it kept me from trying to fight the current on my bare feet and shaking legs. lol.
I sat in the canoe for about 20 minutes, just talking to baby and trying to get him to move around. There hadn't been anything that had happened that could have possibly hurt him, but anytime I get my heart rate up or get stressed out he goes still and silent, and at that point it was just another thing bugging me. So I prayed for just one little kick, and within seconds he was rolling and kicking far more than I had wished for. God is so good that way.
In the mean time, Quinn went fishing for any of our stuff that he might be able to recover, got everything moved downstream to a new put-in point, then came and half carried me to the new spot where we sat in the gravel and ate raw hot dogs, and were very glad for them. All of our soda and water was gone, and our sunscreen, and one of our blankets, and some of our clothes, and our first aid stuff, and etc, but we had our phones, wallets, keys, tent, and food, so we were grateful that neither of us had gotten hurt and that the essentials were all there, and got a move on.
That was about an hour long set back, but we were only about a mile and a half from the James, and then we only had an hour to go to the truck. The James was LOADED with people. They were everywhere. Canoes, kayaks, fisherman, coolers, all in the water. Tons of people on the shore fishing, or picnicking. It was crazy.
We got to the truck around 2, threw everything in, strapped the canoe into the bed, ate cheese and bread and orange juice and went home. Quick showers, clean clothes, and we left again... for Cheddars. Chicken tenders and fried butterfly shrimp and strawberry daiquiris (virgin, of course) were screaming our names, and we were more than happy to oblige them.
Believe it or not, that was one of the best 36 hours of my life, and even though I still can't raise my right arm above my head due to a sore shoulder, and even though I'm bruised and scraped and sunburnt and bug eaten...
We're planning to do it again.
Soon.

And So...
The hunt is officially on. Quinn's last final was this morning and immediately after we were touring a rental. It's a no-go. Old windows and no central air unit would mean sky-high utility bills all summer. 'sides, it was next door to a BBQ and I have a feeling the smell would have been overwhelming after a while. It was cute though... the same thing with a central air unit would have been nice. Landlord was a grouch though...,
I spent the last hour going through several websites, gathering addresses to drive by in the morning. We want to move in 4 weeks, so we kinda need to get on this. I've got 13 addresses...
We're kinda picky. We've got a set price range that we're not willing to go over on. Quinn's requirements are a big living room, lots of windows and a garage. Mine are good floors (I love that everyone is going to original hardwood in all the old houses. Makes so many of them so much better) a decent kitchen, I want a dog, and trees... central heat and air are a must, though if the rent is low enough window units aren't the end of the world. We like the older houses, in the quiet neighborhoods full of elderly people who have been living there since the 50's and 60's. We're looking at some duplexes, but prefer a house. I've got a 900-1100 sq ft minimum in my head. Southside of town, preferably SE... etc.
So far our problem has been cheap landlords. Lots of houses that fit our description, but have $500-1000 worth of minor repairs needed that the land lords are too stingy to make happen. Drives me crazy. All these darling little houses that need new trim work, or new flooring in the kitchens, maybe an updated bathroom... but the landlords want people in and out and don't want to spend a penny more than they have to.
That's kinda why we're looking at duplexes. People seem to take better care of them...
----------------
Anyway, I'm totally overwhelmed with it all today. 4 weeks is NOT long. Especially when you don't have a place lined up to move into. Half of me is screaming to just wait it out until something pops up on craigslist with a little old lady as the landlord who just wants her people to be happy, but the other half of me is dying to get the whole thing over with so I can get settled in and decorate a nursery and plant flowers and play piano while we wait for our little somebody to come along.
*sigh*
---------------
Went in for a consult with a urologist on Monday that turned into a 2 hour appointment and a cystoscopy. If you don't know what it means then I'll fill you in: Cystoscopy: UNHAPPY.
Yeah.
Got home at noon and went to bed. Had really severe abdominal pain all flipping day. Didn't get up 'til 8 when I moved to the couch. Spent a lot of Tuesday in bed too, but also let Q chauffeur me all over Springfield, buy me lunch at Mudhouse and dinner at Pizza Hut, etc. Still hurting today, but not dysfunctional, so I'm back to life, thanks to Tylenol and cold pizza. Life is good.
----------------
I've got the other three members of a wedding quartet coming in 30 minutes to practice for a wedding on Saturday, and I've got a pile of stuff in the middle of the livingroom that has to be put away and a vacuum cleaner waiting patiently to be pushed around. Oh dear. Better run...
Thanks for reading!
--------
Okay. Strike 90% of that. Practice is tomorrow afternoon, not today. I now I have 16 houses/townhomes/duplexes to drive by. I'm making dinner, after which I think I'll go for a drive and see how many of these I can knock off the list. It would make Quinn's morning tomorrow much happier if the list wasn't quite so long.
I also need to call my Mom and tell her I won't be making it out there for piano lessons tomorrow, which I had bumped from Monday because I felt so rotten after my dr visit Monday morning and had it in my head that practice was today... lol. I'm such an air head these days.
Cheating for dinner. Using an Asian Sides rice packet to make a stir fry. So bad. I so don't care.
I think I'll go make a strawberry lemonade. Yeah. That sounds happy.

Lord You Have My Heart...
...and I will search for Yours.
Jesus take my life and lead me on.
My house is a mess. My dishes are piled up. My bathroom needs scoured. My laundry closet is full of dirty laundry needing to be run up and down the stairs to the laundromat in the basement. *sigh*
It's really a very small amount of work when I actually jump in and start doing it, but it can be so hard to get the umph to go at it. kwim?
25 week appointment today. Means I have to do the glucose tolerance test. I doubt I'll tolerate it well... I can't even drink a can of regular pop without my system crashing. BUT, that stupid bottle of orange syrup has been in the door of my fridge for a month, taunting me, and I can't wait for it to be gone. I'm not touching the package of oreos (double stuffed) that's sitting by my head 'cause I know I will be absolutely ill if I eat any extra sugar with that filthsome bottle... but they're calling me...
Quinn is bringing home bread in a few minutes so we can have BLT's for lunch. He texted from class asking if we had sandwich stuff. Seems he's craving a cold cut... he craves food WAY more than I do. Like the oreos... those were his idea at 11:30 last night, so we made an emergency Wally-world run for him. hee.
To be completely fair; he had 2-3 hours of studying ahead of him and really just wanted something to snack on.
And I've been craving pizza for a week.
Generally speaking, I can't tell a difference in baby's activity that seems to be connected to my caffeine intake, but Sunday evening we went out with Logan for dinner and I had 4 huge glasses of diet coke. About half way through the third glass the little guy was doing somersaults. lol. It was even more noticeable 'cause I was eating... and when I eat my stomach gets sooo tight...just like a puppy. hehe. I'm not sure whether he was on a buzz or griping about having his space compressed by my chicken tenders, but he was sure trying to make a statement of some type.
I've started having some very odd dreams about him... Too odd to write or describe, really. I'm assuming this is a normal pregnancy thing....
Seems my husband's family has a neurosis about babies ending up in the washes. 14 year old Tabi said she always had dreams about Nick, the youngest, ending up in the washer, and now has dreams about Becca's baby, Ella, getting stuck in the washer. Becca said she had dreams about Ella in the washer over and over while she was pregnant... I'm gonna have to see if there's a family ghost or something in their history that is haunting them. bwahaha.
Got to spend almost an hour visiting with my oldest brother, Jason, last night. I took brothers Daniel and Micah over there to watch the Spurs game when I left Mom's house after piano lessons yesterday. I wasn't planning on staying, but when I walked in Jason handed me a Klondike bar and before I knew it I was sunk into his couch and as happy as can be. Poor Tonia was sleeping with a fever, but it was good to visit with Jason. Praying he gets a little more work lined up soon, but it's always fun to watch him try out new directions, career wise. He started out as an optometrist's assistant, then went into sales and set some nationwide records back when Chase bank was still Bank One. After that he sold insurance for New York Life, then ended up back at Chase. Currently he's selling web designs and seems to be doing really well with it.
He and Toni have also picked up jewelry making. Toni has always dabbled with it, but now they're selling it. They make some fantastic stuff. I'll have to get some pics and post them. Jason says they get a lot of their ideas from Bones, which is, in my opinion, brilliant. Bones wears the coolest necklaces ever. As does Angela.... and the coolest clothes.
In case you didn't know... I'm kinda obsessed with Bones. I don't watch more than 2 or 3 episodes in one sitting though, 'cause it can get way overwhelming. I have a lot of girlfriends who are madly in love with Booth, and I have to admit that he's pretty special, though I haven't had a genuine tv crush in several years, due to being madly in love with my ultra hot darling of a hubby...
Seriously though, who doesn't love the Deschanel sisters?

Alright. Shutting up now. Quinn's home and it's time to make food...and in 24 minutes I have to drink my sugar dose. Pray for me.

Potassium diet. Ew.
Went to my OB appointment on Thursday and she's sending me to another dr. 'cause of my leg issues. (buckling under me, losing strength in them for 20-40 minutes at a time, so on.) So sometime this coming week I get to see ANOTHER dr. and do ANOTHER round of tests. Ew. The OB is a HUGE stretch for me, coming from a practically dr-free life for 20 years, so this is just overwhelming and depressing on a whole new level.
Thankfully, Dr. L, who she is sending me to, is someone I have met and actually like. I went to Quinn's check up with him a couple weeks ago, which was his first since he switched insurance providers and therefore the first with this dr, and I thought Dr. L was fun, efficient and overall a likable guy. Quinn found him a little too business like, but I like it when people mind what they're supposed to mind. I think that was a special little thing the Lord did for me (having me meet Dr. L ahead of time) because I almost didn't go to the clinic with Quinn, then I almost just sat in the lobby during the appointment, and I'm not even quite sure how I ended up in the exam room...
So, anyway, talking to Mom about it, we were talking through basic deficiencies that might be causing said issues. Calcium is not one of them, as I have a high dairy intake and take 2000 mg of calcium in a high quality supplement every night. What Mom came up with was potassium. A potassium deficiency can cause basic muscular dysfunction.
I did some googling, found a couple of lists of foods high in potassium and amounts recommended for pregnant women, came up with the number of 3500 mg or 80-100ish mEq, and made this list of things to consume every day for four days to see if my cramps lessen and I get back to the point where I can walk more than 20 ft at a time:
-2 smoothies a day containing :
1/2 cup plain yogurt (which is a high potassium source, weirdly enough)
8 oz blueberry/pomegranate juice (found a bottle at Wally with 365 mg per 8 oz. It's nasty though. Quinn smelled it and said "dang. You could clean floors with that." Yeah.)
1/2 cup strawberries (to break up the taste)
-2 bananas
-1 baked potato, skin on
-1/4 cantaloupe
-1 cup of frozen broccoli
-1 8 oz glass of milk
And it comes out to right around 100 mEq a day. I kept it high so that if I miss an item then I'll still make the recommended amount.
The smoothies are soooo nasty and it's the juice that does it. Not sure how to disguise it...
--------------
I'm pretty used to eating this much produce on any given day, but the juice in the smoothies is making it hard. I'm used to a nice, yummy, strawberry, pineapple, orange smoothie when I make a smoothie. (probably 5 or 6 times last week) I just downed a 16 oz glass of the filthsome blueberry/pom stuff for breakfast and I'm feeling rather nauseated.
--------------
Didn't get around to potato pancakes yesterday morning, as it was on orchestra morning and Quinn made me promise to sleep until the last minute, so I had a boiled egg and a plum for breakfast.
I'm gonna make them for brunch today. Yay!
--------------
Quinn stopped at RedBox last night and got Wolverine, 'cause I hadn't seen it yet. Other than seeming very long, and the retarded scene with the Blob, I very much enjoyed it. Reminded me of a debate between Aaron and I years ago when Reign of Fire came out and the first x-Men was still pretty new, and Aaron was all in love with Matthew Mcconaughey's build and starting to work out a lot, but I insisted that next to Jackman, Mcconaughey was a scrawny dork... Aaron and I had a LOT of debates at that stage in life.
We were some of those siblings who did absolutely everything together and adored each other, but fought 90% of the time. About everything. About each other's friends, about clothes, movies, schedules, plans, food, etc. The only thing we didn't fight about was our Jesus. It's hard to fight about Him. As soon as He comes up in any conversation it becomes so easy to be pleasant and understanding.
He has this way of doing that to people...if they let Him.
Thank God for Christ.

My 5 year old baby brother got baptized on Easter morning! Story goes that he went to Mom on Saturday evening, insisting that he needed to be baptized because it was a picture of Jesus rising from the dead, so Mom told him to talk to Dad about it, so he went to Dad, and they agreed that he needed to be baptized. Sunday services the next morning, and no one thinking that Benjamin was going to be baptized until a later date, but church ended and Benjamin went running to the church crying "no! Wait! You forgot! I HAVE to be baptized TODAY!"
So everyone waited for 40 minutes while the guys pulled a stock tank to the front yard and put a few inches of water in the bottom of it, then they all gathered round and the sweet little man was baptized. The pictures are precious. I, sadly, was not there, but on Monday I got to talk to him about it and he was all smiles and nods and happyness. I'll post a few pics as soon as I can get them from my Mom.
I was baptized on Easter Sunday in 98. It was a huge deal to me. My brother Daniel was baptized the same day.... it's so amazing to be a part of a family that adores Christ Jesus and always puts Him first.

God bless and keep you all!

Lord, You are more precious than silver.
Lord, You are more costly than gold.
Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds,
And nothing I desire compares to You.

Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds,
And nothing I desire compares to You.

What was my last post about?
I honestly don't remember. Oh well.
That kinda annoyed me, 'cause I should have taken a family shot of the three of them, and had Nathan take a good pic of Quinn and I. There haven't been any pictures of us together for several weeks. But I'll live.
Had a lovely Easter with Becca, Nathan and Ella. We had even numbers; 3 boys and 3 girls, which means that I was terribly outnumbered when Becca to Ella to her room to change out of church clothes into comfy clothes.
We all decided that cold lunches on Easter Sunday were a beautiful thing. It didn't take a whole lot of prep, was virtually no mess, and was absolutely delicious. If you can believe it, I forgot to take pictures other than the one mobile pic I snapped of my chocolate covered strawberries and pound cake:

The menu for the day was Chicken Salad on croissants, Fruit Salad with orange reduction, Chips, Pound Cake and Chocolate Covered Strawberries.
The chicken salad I can't really post a recipe for because there isn't actually a recipe for it. It's one of those things that Gramma and Mom have been making all my life, so I just know how to make it. We make a homemade dressing and pour it over broccoli, chicken and bacon. That's just how we do it.
The fruit salad was simply whatever fruit I wanted (plums, peaches, strawberries, grapes, fresh pineapple, kiwi and mandarin oranges) then I sprinkled a little sugar over it all and cooked 1 cup of orange juice, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1/2 cup of sugar down until about half of it dissolved. Cooled it and poured it over the fruit and it made a fantastic sauce. Messy, but yummy.

So we've spent the week laughing at my tummy. When I lay on my back it moves... a lot. This little man is almost never still. He wakes me up in the mornings doing dolphin impersonations.I'm thinking I'll have a hyperactive ADD baby... but we'll see. ;)
Getting used to the perpetual ligament pain. Starting to ignore it for the most part. I've got my legs back this week, which is a HUGE blessing. We actually spent 45 minutes walking around the mall last night and I only had to sit down once! YAY!
I am hungry All. The. Time. If I eat a lot, though, I get sick. If I eat as often as I want to, I get sick. So, I eat my three meals a day and have 1 or 2 snacks. Usually cheese bread or sugar free yogurt or something like that. I sit around day dreaming about food though. It's scary.
Have to go to my OB appointment without Quinn this week. It's the first (and only) appointment that they scheduled for anything other than a Tuesday afternoon, and he can't get time off for it. :( I need to write a list of things to talk about, 'cause he's usually my memo pad. lol.

Gonna go make food. As always.
Thanks for reading!
